Dutch

There is a very good listing of Tolkien's works translated into Dutch at Tolkien's Library.

Dutch practice for accounting for printing number varies depending on publisher and a "starting date" which is listed in the copyright page.   Until 1997 the number is how many printings there have been of any edition of In de Ban van de Ring from the beginning in 1957 when the first translation into Dutch was published.  Thus, Dutch G, which was published in 1975, is called the "Zeventiende druk" (17th edition) and Dutch I, which was published in 2022, is called the "Vijftennegentigste druk" (95th edition).  These editions list the "Eerste druk" (First edition) from 1957 and count from that one, whether there are intermediate revisions (such as "Vijftenveertigste, geheel herziene druk, 1997", 45th completely revised edition) or not.  Other counts begin with the 1997 revised edition or (as is the case with De Hobbit and De Silmarillion with the first paperback editions in 1988.  While the Dutch term druk can be translated either "edition" or "printing", I'll stick with "edition" here, despite its ambiguity.  The term oplage, rarely actually used except in conjunction with druk, will be translated "printing".

This same general practice is used for all the other works, although the "Eerste druk" is not always referenced and the counting might begin from "Eerste druk als paperback" (the first paperback edition) rather than the first Hobbit edition.

In the bibliographic notes for each copy below, I list the Dutch edition number with any revision notes as in Dutch (but translated into English).  For example, "Fourth printing [Vierde druk], 1974" (from Dutch [PR-SW, FG, LN] A--first printing of this was in 1971).  This list is by no means a complete history of Dutch publishing of Tolkien's works.  These are simply the data points from my own collection.

Such a system is sometimes confusing for an English speaker used to the American and British publishing standards and there are times that I'm sure I have not completely understood the intent of the notes and how to translate them into English terminology.

This is the first edition of the first translation into any language of LOTR, so it occupies a special place for collectors.  There were only 3000 copies printed and this edition was never printed again.  Copies with both the books and the original dust jackets in very good condition can cost up to 1000 € or more.  Because only one of the three dust jackets on this copy are undamaged (except for normal wear) and the books themselves are in good, but not very good, condition, I paid a fifth of that after an on-line auction.  But unlike the other 2999 copies, this one is mine.

The art on the covers and spines are some of Tolkien's own drawings.  After this edition, Dutch three-volume editions of LOTR usually have the Appendices printed as a separate volume, although I have not found any Mynx editions that include the Appendices either as a separate volume or included in the RK volume.
