This volume replicates my first Hobbit from the late 1960s that died a natural death in the early 1990s. It was the first of Tolkien's works that I ever bought. I replaced it with English [H] A (below). I purchased this Hobbit in 2026 off ebay. My original copy was purchased before 1970, in 1967 or 1968, but this particular copy is a first printing from 1965 (with the famous lion on the cover that was removed in later printings). It is close to being the same age as my late first copy, but I don't remember whether mine had the lion or not.

I actually wrote to a couple of ebay sellers who had a one-volume LOTR in English and had them measure the width of their offering. This one fit.

I bought this when it first came out back in 1977 and it happens to be a first printing of the first American edition. It's easy to identify the first printing because on the list of Tolkien's writings is "Father Giles of Ham" (rather than "Farmer Giles of Ham).
