This volume replicates my first Hobbit from the late 1960s that died a natural death in the early 1990s. It was the first of Tolkien's works that I ever bought. I replaced it with English [H] A (below). I purchased this Hobbit in 2026 off ebay. My original copy was purchased before 1970, in 1967 or 1968, but this particular copy is a first printing from 1965 (with the famous lion on the cover that was removed in later printings). It is close to being the same age as my late first copy, but I don't remember whether mine had the lion or not.

I bought this when it first came out back in 1977 and it happens to be a first printing of the first American edition. It's easy to identify the first printing because on the list of Tolkien's writings is "Father Giles of Ham" (rather than "Farmer Giles of Ham).

During the print run for this edition the right edge of one printing plate broke so that on page 229 the right edge of lines 29-32 (the large paragraph on the lower half of the page) lost all or part of the final letters of several words, making them look cut off. Thus the first American printing is divided into two states, the First State and the Second State. My copy is part of the Second State.

A hardback version of this Hobbit was originally published along with English E, but it is very rare. I normally wouldn't have purchased a paperback edition, but the cover art for all four volumes (H+LOTR) is a single Alan Lee painting, "Nazgûl over Minas Morgul", 3/4 of which can be seen above on the box for the LOTR set. The painting on the cover of the Hobbit fits on the left side of the 3/4 of the painting on the box and LOTR covers as shown below.
A hardback version of this Hobbit was originally published along with English E, but it is very rare.
