While the illustrations inside are by Alan Lee, this dust jacket art is by Geoff TaylorThey appeared first on the covers and box of a 1999 English language paperback edition of LOTR, but have been used on some translations as well.  They have also appeared on a German translation of a couple of volumes of Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series (Das Rad der Zeit).

The art on the dust jackets of this set is interesting in two ways.  First, the paintings wrap all the way around the books including the spines (as shown below).  Second, the portion of the paintings on the front covers (but not the back covers) are integrated across the volumes (as shown at left) much like the iconic Barbara Remington painting on English B.  It is quite a creative effect.

In 2011, I was attending a conference in Prague.  While there I traveled to the Václavské náměstí and found the Palác knih Luxor, a very large bookstore.  I don't speak Czech and try not to use too much English when I travel, so I just said to the clerk who wanted to give me directions, "Tolkien". The world was still riding the wave of the Peter Jackson films, so there was an entire bookcase filled with Tolkien's works.  The clerk pointed this set out to me as I looked a little overwhelmed at the assortment and that was good enough for me.
